News portals are being deluged with articles reasserting that the CIA has secret holding camps in Eastern Europe for top terror suspects.
The issue returned to the front pages after a crucial lead by ABC News, and it has now been claimed that the US quickly evacuated the camps as heat from the World Press began to build last month.
Poland is one of the main suspects as a host for the camps, although Poles themselves remain in the dark. The outgoing Polish President Aleksander Kwsaniewski continues to deny the existence of such facilities.
The former Polish government backed US foreign policy and it supplied a significant body of peace-keeping troops to Iraq. The general public was largely opposed to the war, a scenario that was mirrored in many European countries.
By creating camps for top terror suspects outside the US, the CIA would effectively have placed the institutions outside the jurisdiction of US Law.
Nevertheless, if the claims prove to be true, there is likely to be a severe backlash. The concept of placing camps in an area of Europe that is infamous for the legacy of Nazi Concentration Camps will invite damaging parallels.
The freshly stacked allegations have made for a tricky finale to Condoleeza Rice's visit to Europe. The US Secretary of State is currently attempting to maintain composure in Berlin, where she held a conference with newly elected Chancellor Angela Merkel.
