A rally in support of equal rights for sexual minorities in Poland has taken place in downtown Warsaw.

The several hundred peaceful demonstrators were joined by politicians from the left wing SLD and SdPL, as well as the Greens and Democratic Party. Police guarded the protesters against any counter manifestations by opponents.

Similar actions, which obtained a legal status from local authorities, have been staged in 6 other large cities across the country. They were a continuation of a series that was started on Saturday to show solidarity with sexual rights campaigners in the city of Poznan, who had been brutally dispersed by riot police last weekend.

A spokesman for the All-Poland Youth attached to the Catholic right League of Polish Families (LPR) said representatives of the organization have been carefully watching the protests and limited their actions to staging press conferences on the spot. Last week in Poznan, a counter demonstration was organized threatening the equal rights rally participants and abusing them verbally. Police displayed a passive stand towards the violent youngsters.
