Before suspending its first meeting, the Parliament adopted a resolution on the 21st anniversary of the death of the Solidarity priest Jerzy Popieluszko, who was brutally murdered by communist era security police.

The MPs pledged to continue the work of Father Popieluszko, a defender of the poor. A chaplain of the Solidarity trade union and workers, he openly criticized the abuses of workers and human rights by the communist regime. His sermons in one of Warsaw’s churches invariably attracted great crowds. He was often intimidated by the security police, who eventually murdered him and threw his body into the Vistula river. His grave in Warsaw brings pilgrims from all over Poland and the world. A procedure to declare father Popieluszko saint is under way.
