Olympic champion swimmer Otylia Jedrzejczak is recovering from head and spinal injuries in a car crash that killed her brother a day earlier.
She was in stable condition and was moved Sunday from a hospital in Plock to a better-equipped one in Warsaw.
Jedrzejczak has spinal fractures and deep head cut, said Robert Smigielski, a doctor for Poland's Olympic swimmers. He said she needs to be under observation.
"We need to secure her spine so the healing process can begin," Smigielski told the TV station TVN24.
Asked about the prospects of a return for the 21-year-old swimmer, he said: "If she could get back to her former condition after six months, it would be super."
Jedrzejczak was driving with 19-year-old brother Szymon when she tried to overtake cars on a two-lane road near Plock, about 60 miles from Warsaw. In an apparent attempt to avoid an oncoming car, she swerved into a ditch before crashing into a tree.
Jedrzejczak won a gold medal in the 200-meter butterfly and added two silver medals at the 2004 Athens Olympics. This year, she won the world title in the 200 butterfly and set a world record at the distance.
