Medieval Showdown Relived

Today marks the 595th anniversary of the battle of Grunwald, the biggest armed clash of medieval Europe, when the forces of Polish King Ladislaus Jagiello together with his Lithuanian brother Vitold’s faced the armoured knights of the Teutonic Order led by the Great Master Ulrich von Jungingen.

Although heavily outnumbered, the Polish and Lithuanian forces managed a spectacular victory in the battle.

Each year a commemorative repeat of the event is staged with thousands of volunteers clad in costumes and replicas of armour from the July 15th battle of 1410, which is watched by an equally impressive crowd of spectators. Due to the expected number of tourists this weekend police has organized several detours and speed limit zones on the major highway from Gdansk to Warsaw in the vicinity of the Grunwald Field.
