Germans Nervous Of Would-Be President

The influential German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung claims that a victory of Lech Kaczynski in the coming presidential elections may change Polish-German relations for the worse.

Kaczynski demanded from the German government a bill which would annul any demands for compensations from the Germans deported from Poland after the World War 2. If Germany fails to comply, Kaczynski wants to demand compensation for Polish war-time losses. Only Warsaw authorities estimate the losses at over 31 billion US dollars. No party in Germany is willing to satisfy Kaczynski’s demands as that would mean that compensations will have to paid by German authorities.

Kaczynski and his party, however, are adamant as they claim no country can accept the situation that one third of its territory may be subject to foreign claims.
