Lech Kaczynski, the mayor of Warsaw and a leading presidential candidate, was convicted Friday of slander - a ruling that could force his resignation.

The court ruled that Kaczynski, 56, slandered former Lech Walesa aide Mieczyslaw Wachowski by calling him "a repeated criminal" in a radio interview four years ago when Kaczynski was justice minister.

Kaczynski was unrepentant after the verdict. "I would repeat these words again, because I speak the truth and there is a deficit of truth in Poland," he said.
