Walking out of the Centrum Metro station, you’ll be greeted by welcoming artwork. Cheers to the city and artists who transformed this once dismal hole in the ground into a pleasant walkway.
“This is an ideal canvas on which young artists may practice,” states Professor Miroslaw Duchowski of the Fine Arts Academy. Groups of students studying art and architecture prepared projects with ideas for the walls lining this area. The two most interesting ideas were chosen by a panel of judges.
The project drawings were converted to slides. During the night, the slide images were projected onto the walls. Students traced the contour lines, and then later painted the walls accordingly.
On the long wall directly opposite entrances into the metro station you can find a pop-art piece entitled “Uncontrolled Conversations” – an interesting view into a store where we see a variety of provocative characters standing in line. The colors are dulled on purpose to ensure the image will look good on both sunny and rainy days.
The second piece located on the east wall is considerably smaller but just as interesting. The influence of the students’ architectural field of study is obvious. We see an ecological synthesis of big-city architecture – bridges, chimneys, skyscrapers, apartment buildings. None of the buildings have windows, and are all overgrown by green plants.
Residents of Warsaw were very happy to see the new artwork take form on the previously dull walls, and hope the city will continue the art project in other areas as well.
