Warsaw’s newest resident arrived Tuesday in a large crate. His arrival attracted the curiosity of people picnicking nearby, who quickly gathered around and waited in anticipation.
Hugo, the only Indian Rhinoceros in Poland, is now lounging away at the Warsaw Zoo. Visitors will be able to meet with Hugo starting this Saturday. He is two and a half years old – a relief to zoo keepers as he will be easier to take care of then a younger rhinoceros.
Tuesday evening, Hugo had his first press meeting. Everyone compared Hugo to the late Gyana, the first Indian Rhinoceros ever to set foot on Polish soil, who unfortunately died a few months ago.
“He’s smaller, but cute,” commented Maciej Rembiszewski, director of the zoo. Mr. Rembiszewski also mentioned that they are trying to hook Hugo up on a blind date with a gal from the San Diego Zoo (the hometown of the late Gyana). Apparently he hopes the two will hit it off, “With this breeding we are taking part in an international effort to save these endangered animals. There are only 1,500 left on the earth.”
Welcome Hugo, and good luck with the girl – remember, follow your natural instincts.
