Poland's Pope passes away

Pope John Paul II passed away on Saturday night. Poles came out onto the streets to mourn his death, turning the streets of towns and cities across the country into one great open air church.

Wawel Cathedral's Zygmunt Bell, rung only on great national occasions, pealed mournfully and at length as Cracovians emerged from their homes in a silent mark of respect.

A state of national mourning has been declared until Karol Wojtyla, Poland's charismatic Pope, is finally laid to rest.
