After the EU gates opened to Poland, roughly 800,000 old cars were driven in. Over one-third of the cars on Polish roads today are over 15 years old. What we have is a gold mine of junk waiting to be cashed in!
The EU requires 85% percent of old cars be recycled. Scrap metal dealers calculate that up to 500 million PLN a year could come just from selling and recycling parts of these jalopies. Good news for companies wishing to enter into the market!
Marek Cywinski, president of the largest scrap metal recycling company Stena, sees much promise in this industry. “We are in talks with most of car producers. We want to take part in creating a professional and effective system of collecting and recycling cars not in use. We project the investment would be worth more than 1 million EUR.”
Regulations state that car producers and importers who sell over 1,000 cars per year must either develop a system of buying old cars for scrap or pay 500 PLN to the government for each car sold – money which would be invested in the recycling program. With Poles buying over 300,000 new cars each year, it only makes sense to look into recycling.
