A large poster depicting Pope John Paul II is on display in downtown Warsaw, giving the city a taste of the contemporary art that will be on display in a planned museum.

The poster by Polish artist Piotr Uklanski is about two stories high and consists of thousands of Brazilian soldiers photographed from the air in an arrangement that resembles the Polish-born pontiff's face in profile.

"It encourages and shows that contemporary art does not have to be controversial and provocative," Culture Ministry spokeswoman Anna Godzisz said. "It can be clear to understand, pleasant to the eye and at the same time have a moral value to it."

The poster went up Wednesday near Warsaw's landmark Palace of Culture on the site where the government plans to build the city's first modern art museum. It will remain for three months, Godzisz said.
