Warsaw Heritage Added to UNESCO List
The Archive of Warsaw Reconstruction Office has been added to UNESCO's Memory of the World register along with 44 other new documents and collection raising the total items in the register to 238.
The collection of the Warsaw Reconstruction Office includes the incredible achievements of the post-World War II reconstructions in 1945-1953 after the city was nearly completely destroyed. The UNESCO website writes:
"As a result of the rebuilding, Warsaw, a city doomed to disappear and suffering programmed destruction for ideological and political reasons in times of Nazi occupation, became the symbol of an “invincible city”."
Other Polish items in the Memory of the World register include Nicolaus Copernicus' masterpiece "De revolutionibus libri sex" as well as works by Fryderyk Chopin.
