Warsaw Re-Elects Gronkiewicz-Waltz

Poland headed to the polls last week in a nationwide election for local government, which saw the re-election of Warsaw's mayoral incumbent Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz.

A member of the Civic Platform (PO) party, Gronkiewicz-Waltz has been mayor, or "president" as the title is called in Poland's largest cities, of Warsaw since 2006. In the recent elections, Gronkiewicz-Waltz secured just over 50 percent support from voters nearly 30 percent ahead of competitor and independent candidate Czeslaw Bielecki who received 23 pecent support. Coming in at third place was Wojciech Olejniczak of the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) party with 13 percent support.

In many local districts across Poland, a clear winner did not emerge with many cities, including Krakow, set for run-off elections in early December.
