Poetry in the Metro

The third edition of the Poetry in the Metro ("Wiersze w Metrze") festival has kicked off in Warsaw's underground. The event will fill the metro's trains and stations with poems - specifically contemporary European works, following a theme of the city and the European Year of Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion.

The opening ceremony featured an appearance by Icelandic poet Bragi Olafsson, also a writer and musician (formerly with Bjork in the Sugarcubes). Throughout the rest of the month, several other special events will take places including exhibitions, competitions, poetry readings, and a public game called "Hunting for Words: Poetic City Game of Future" where words are collected using your mobile phone.

The Wiersze w Metrze festival is modelled after the original Poems on the Underground which first began in London in 1986 and is now repeated in cities across the world.
