Komorowski Wins Presidency

Following an inconclusive presidential election earlier last month, where no single candidate won over 50 percent of the required vote, a second run-off election took place last weekend in Poland.

This time, only the top two candidates were able to compete with Jaroslaw Kaczynski of the Law and Justice party (PiS) and Bronislaw Komorowski of the Civic Platform (PO) party going head to head. The election took place on Sunday 4 July and brought 55.31 percent of eligible voters to polling stations.

Running up to the second round of elections, both conservative Kaczynski and centre-right candidate Komorowski seemed to be neck and neck in the race to becoming Poland's next president. This continued to prove true even on election day when exit polls varied with some predicting a win for Kaczynski, but most predicting a win for Komorowski.

Official results weren't announced until the following day in the afternoon, when Komorowski was officially crowned victor in the race to the presidential seat. Komorowski received 53.01 percent of the vote, while his opponent received 46.99 percent.
