Ready for Warsaw's own Museum of Modern Art
There are many modern and contemporary art galleries across Warsaw, including the well-known Zacheta National Gallery of Art and the Centre for Contemporary Art in the Ujazdowski Castle - but the city still lacks a large, central, and all-encompassing Museum of Modern Art.
While the Museum of Modern Art cultural institution has existed since 2005, it was in 2008 when the institution moved to its current, temporary location at 3 Panska street. Since then, the Museum of Modern Art has organized exhibitions focusing on modern and contemporary art and design while simultaneously cultivating its art collection in preparation for the opening of its future, permanent location.
The Museum of Modern Art's building will be located on Plac Defilad next to the Palace of Culture and Science. Until a few months ago, a market was located in a warehouse at that location, but as you can see on the corner of Swietorzyska and Marszalkowska streets, this building has recently been demolished. The building's design, by Swiss architect Christian Kerez, was chosen in 2007 and its final concept was approved in late 2009. Construction will begin in the autumn of 2011 and the doors of the landmark Museum of Modern Art will finally open in the spring of 2014.
