Warsaw Deals with Aftermath of Flood Wave
As waters recede in the Vistula, the city must now deal with the aftermath of the flood wave which swept through Warsaw and remained a threat for nearly a week. While the water is just now reaching below the 650 cm emergency level, over the weekend that number was at nearly 800.
Approximately nine thousand firefighters, soldiers, police offiers, city guards, and thousands of volunteers, worked at keeping flood waters at bay along the Vistula coasts over the last week. The city has calculated that the cost of the flood is expected to be about 1 million zloty, much of which was spent on materials such as sandbags. The city has also announced that it will proceed with plans, 10 years in the making, to construct a flood barrier on the eastern coast of the Vistula near the Warsaw zoo.
With water levels now significantly down the vast majority of closed schools are now open again. The Miedzeszynski embankment on the eastern coast of the Vistula is once again open for car traffic.
