Presidential Race Begins
Following the death of President Lech Kaczynski earlier this month, Poland has begun preparations to elect his successor. Parliamentary speaker and acting president Bronislaw Komorowski announced the date of the elections as 20 June, and has declared his intention to run for office. Komorowski, a member of the Civic Platform (PO) party and close ally of Prime Minister Donald Tusk, has so far led in polls over his competition.
Running against Komorowski in the elections is Jaroslaw Kaczynski, leader of the opposing Law and Justice (PiS) party, former Prime Minister, and twin brother of former president Lech Kaczynski. When announcing his candidacy Jaroslaw Kaczynski said he would like to continue the mission of his brother. However, Komorowski continues to lead in most opinion polls despite the surge of sympathy for Kaczynski.
