World leaders are coming together in nothern Poland today to mark the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of World War 2. The first ceremony began at 4:45am at Westerplatte in Gdansk, marking the first shots fired in 1939. War veterans were joined by Polish President Lech Kaczynski and Prime Minister Donald Tusk at the ceremony early this morning.

Foreign guests will join Poles in remembrance through ceremonies and speeches, the most anticipated of which is set to be that of visiting Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. Other guests include German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

In Warsaw, a giant banner commemorating the events of the start of World War 2 was hung yesterday from the Palace of Culture and Science. A special exhibition entitled "Zeczelo sie w Polsce" (It Started in Poland) also opened yesterday near the Centrum metro station with a multimedia display tracing the most important events of the Second World War.
