Kibbutz in Central Warsaw

Israeli artist Yael Bartana has begun the construction of a mock kibbutz in the heart of Warsaw, as part of a video trilogy she is filming in the city.

A kibbutz is a communal living space usually based on agriculture. They were first built by Jewish settlers in Palestine in the early 20th century. This particular kibbutz in construction in Warsaw will include the fencing and watchtower of fortified kibbutz communities hence the name of the project - Tower and Stockade, or Mur i Wieza in Polish.

Bartana is fascinated with the return of Jews to Poland, and what this means for those involved and their collective memories.

The kibbutz is being built on the site of the future Museum of the History of Polish Jews, next to the monument commemorating the Heroes of the 1943 Ghetto Uprising.

The opening of the kibbutz will take place on June 25th at 7pm.
