The road accident numbers for the All Saints Day holiday weekend never cease to shock. The 1st of November in Poland is a day given over to remembering the dead and the population heads en masse to cemetries in order to light candles and spend time at the gravesides of departed family members and friends.

Unfortunately it is also a time of year when due to the mass movement of people the road accident figures reach staggering heights. The statistics for this past weekend were announced by the Polish police authorities this morning: 424 accidents, 41 people killed, 533 injured and 1416 arrests for drunk driving.

These figures are an increase on the 2007 figures of 306 accidents, 35 dead and 354 injured.
