Zloty Hits Record Highs

The National Bank of Poland hiked up interest rates at the end of June, sending the zloty flying against the euro to a record high. The country's central bank raised its key interest by a quarter of a percentage point, in a move designed to battle rising inflation. Since April 2007, the rate has been increased eight times, to its current rate of six percent. The central bank is expected to keep raising the rates through the end of the year, as a response to a booming economy with rising wages and inflation.

While this news is good for Polish pockets, it may put a damper on Poland’s tourist industry, as tourists may be deterred when they find prices not as low as they expected against the euro or pound. A study has found that already up to the month of June, 10 percent fewer tourists had visited Poland than in 2007. The zloty has already risen seven percent against the euro since the start of the year.
