While handing in a resignation as prime minister is certainly not a joyous occasion, it must be especially painful to hand that resignation in to your twin brother, but that's what (now former) Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski had to do yesterday with his brother, President Lech Kaczynski. The defeated prime minister and leader of the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party has tendered his government's resignation, and the victorious Civic Platform (PO) party, with its leader Donald Tusk, is ready to take over the reigns in leading Poland.
Tusk is expected to be nominated as prime minister later this week, and together with the Peasant's Party, will create a new coalition government. However, President Kaczynski is still in power for a few more years, and his veto power is expected to make things a lot harder for PO. |
