Poland Rally Against Portugal
Poland put a major dent in Portugal's qualifying chances for Euro 2008 when they scored a late goal courtesy of Jacek Krzynowek, to draw the game 2-2.
Although star-studded Portugal dominated much of the match in Lisbon, it was the plucky Poles who struck first with Mariusz Lewandowski's 44th-minute opener. It was only after the break that Maniche pulled things back for the Portugese, whilst it was Man United star Cristiano Ronaldo who smashed in a cross on the 73rd minute to take the lead.
2 - 1 down against a home team is never an enviable position to be in, but it shows how far this Polish team has come physically, and more importantly mentally, that they were able to salvage a point from the match - and to deny their qualifying rivals two points as well. There was an element of luck about the goal as Lewandowski's shot from range hit the bar and the back of the Portugese keeper, Ricardo Pereira, before settling in the netting, but it was luck that Polish fans will say the team earned with their gritty performance.
The result leaves Poland on top of group A, and in good spirits as they travel to Finland for their next qualifying match.
