A Polish lady born and raised in New York is set to begin a dizzying adventure on the silver screen. Naomi Novik's fantastical literary creations have already gained a cult following amongst fantasy readers, but her discovery by Peter Jackson looks likely to take her stories to a worldwide audience.
'Temeraire', Mrs Novik's unlikely tale of dragons on the High Seas during the Napoleonic Wars would make most directors a tad nervous, but not Mr Jackson, who feels more than at home with strange beasts.
" 'Temeraire' is a terrific meld of two genres that I particularly love — fantasy and historical epic," he told the Hollywood Reporter. "I can't wait to see Napoleonic battles fought with a squadron of dragons. That's what I go to the movies for."
Mrs Novik is understandably positive about the choice of director. Indeed, there are few who have scored so many hits in the fantasy genre as Jackson. But where on earth did Mrs Novik gain the original inspiration for such far out material? Well, as the authoress herself reveals, she was brought up in the magical world of Polish folk tales, a start that had her hooked on fantasy for life.
