More than 20,000 new jobs will be created and 240million PLN (Ł41million) will be added to the country’s coffers when Miss World 2006 takes place in Poland, according to an independent study.

The prestigious Institute of Market Economy Research (IBnGR) carried out an appraisal of the economic effects of Miss World 2006 taking place in Poland. The staging of Miss World 2006 carries great opportunity and prestige for Poland and promotes the country globally with positive economic effects, including the creation of many new jobs in tourism and associated industries, the report states.

Faster economic growth and higher rate of employment as an effect of hosting Miss World 2006 should result in budget income increase coming from different taxes. According to the report, the additional income to the national budget in 2007-2010 will be 240 million PLN, with 13 million PLN from the VAT and the companies income tax alone.

As the result of the strong influence of tourism on the national economy, IBnGR estimates that Miss World 2006 will positively affect the rate of economic development, with the annual rate of growth in GDP in 2007-2010 estimated to be 0,1-0,4% higher due to the benefits of hosting Miss World 2006.

According to the report, significant immediate effects will be seen arising directly from contest, with proceeds from the accommodation and support of up to 4,000 people working on the preparation of the event and the income from advertising and marketing of the month-long contest.

The long-term economic effects of the election of the most beautiful woman in the world are equally impressive. According to the Institute’s experts, the promotion of Poland will result in greater interest among foreign tourists, which will cause a significant increase in the number of people visiting Poland.

A direct consequence of this will be the accelerated development of Poland’s tourist market. As tourism is connected with many other branches of economy, growth in that area will result in vast improvement of the country’s general economic situation.

Among these factors the report emphasises the improvement of the image of Poland for foreign investors and the promotion of regions of Poland less well-known in the world. IBnGR estimates that the Polish regions would have to spend at least 30 million PLN on promotion to achieve any similar effect.

A further recent study by the TNS OBOP Research Institute asserts that 90% of Poles have watched a previous TV broadcast of Miss World, and nearly 70% of respondents will watch this year’s ceremony broadcast live from Warsaw on September 30th.
