Head of the Muslim Religious Union in Poland Tomasz Miskiewicz demanded an apology from the editor-in-chief of the Rzeczpospolita daily which reprinted caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad in its Saturday issue.

"On behalf of the Muslim community in Poland I demand a public apology for an offence against our religious feelings and compensation for the spiritual suffering caused to the Muslim community," Miskiewicz wrote in a letter to Rzeczpospolita's editor-in-chief Grzegorz Gauden.

Miskiewicz threatened to notify the prosecutor's office about possible legal violations committed by Rzeczpopsolita if it fails to apologise.

Rzeczpospolita's editor-in-chief said the daily reprinted the cartoons in defence of freedom of speech.
