Concert: Mum

Icelandic electonic pop-rockers Mum (pronounced "Moom") will be performing only two concerts in Poland as part of their European tour: and the first one in Warsaw's Fabryka Trzciny, and one in Katowice's Hipnoza Jazz Club the following day. It's rare that Poland gets concerts by independent artists of such calibre as Mum, and for many Poles it will be the first chance to see this amazing band live. We highly recommend this show!

Exhibition: Exploring the Interwar Period in Polish Art

From the 18th of January until the end of March, the National Museum in Warsaw will explore Polish art in the interwar years, 1918-1939. The aim of the exhibition is to present the first cross-sectional panorama of Polish art during that era, presenting everything from paintings to poster design, showcasing the general character and visual atmosphere of the 1920s and 30s in Poland. Primarily, the exhibition will present main artistic currents in their relation to historic and social context rather than stressing individual trends.

Exhibition: "This is Not an Exhibition"

The project "This is Not an Exhibition" is an atypical presentation of selected works from the Zacheta National Gallery of Art's collection. Instead of focusing on the works themselves, the anti-exhibition focuses on the process of caring for works of art, specifically the more problematic works of modern art composed through non-traditional techniques. The exposition will show a process, presenting many exhibits as they are documented, go through conservation works, and mounted for exhibition. There will be also talks with the artists about their workshops and the concepts behind their creation.

While the themes of his paintings range from family photographs to the internet to books, references are made to his native hometown of Tarnow, as well as themes of war and the Holocaust and post-war Polish life in general. The exhibition will also feature numerous portraits and even designs on t-shirts made by the artist.

Exhibition: "After Jedwabne"

Zofia Lipecka's exhibition "After Jedwabne" is a reaction to Jan Tomasz Gross’s 2001 book Neighbours, and will be showing at the Zacheta National Gallery of Art from the 8th of March until the 18th of May. The exhibition includes a presentation of video-installations presenting several faces showing their reactions to a reading of text from Gross's book, which tells of the killing of Jews by Poles in Poland during World War II, in a tragic event known as the Jedwabne pogrom or Jedwabne massacre. Through the exhibition, the spectators surrounded by the projections themselves become a part of the installation and are forced to immerse themselves in the subject matter. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue with texts by Philippe Piguet and Elzbieta Janicka (in Polish, English, and French).

Easter in Warsaw

Easter is one of the most evocative times to visit Warsaw. While Easter Sunday itself falls on the 23rd of March, the previous week's celebrations involve dozens of colourful customs to savour leading up to Easter. Above all, the spiritual power of Holy Week endures. Poland remains a deeply Catholic country - as you'll see by walking into any church during the run up to Good Friday.
