The Great Finale of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity

Since 1993, the first Sunday of the year has been the so-called “Great Finale” of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity. The XV edition of the Finale falls on Sunday, 7 January 2006, when volunteers previously registered in the Foundation collect money on the streets of their hometowns. Though the Great Orchestra started in 1993 as a fundraising event to help buy equipment for the children's cardiology unit in the main Warsaw hospital, it has grown exponentially over the years, and the one-day finale is the apex of the Foundation’s yearlong money-raising efforts. The Foundation has raised over 9 million dollars in one day, and hopes to break even that record in 2007.

The event not only features volunteers all over Poland collecting donations, but also concerts, parties, auctions, and other events organized especially for the Great Finale. Since its inception, the Foundation has had many tangible results - the survival rate for pediatric surgery has doubled since 1993, due entirely to the Orchestra. So when some jolly youngsters dressed in red ask you for spare change, be generous – it’s for the children!

Don’t let the snow discourage you from thinking about your own day in white. The annual Polish Wedding Fair, or the “Great Wedding Gala” is coming to the Palace of Culture this January. Kult Concert

Legendary Polish rock band Kult will once again leave audiences’ bodies shaking and ears bleeding (metaphorically, of course… we hope) on the 18th of January at Palladium. Another of Poland’s long-lasting rock’n’roll survivors, the band has been rocking for over two decades now, since it first showed its punk roots to Polish crowds in the early 80s. Tickets go on sale 22 November and are priced at 42 PLN pre-sale and 46 PLN at the door (if any remain, that is), or available online.

Sohne Mannheims

One of the biggest – and we’re not just talking about the number of members – German bands is playing their only Polish concert at the Stodola student club. One of the most popular and successful German bands, Sohne Mannheims have sold over two million copies of their last album and received an Echo award – the German version of the Grammy. The hardworking musicians will be playing 20 concerts on this latest tour, in which they’ll be testing out their newest songs on captive, intimate club audiences. Tickets start at 70 PLN pre-sale. And good news for the youngest fans – children under 16 will be allowed if accompanied by a parent!

"Transfer"

The Wspolczeny Teatre would like to present "Transfer," a play by Maksym Kuroczkin about a young businessman who receives an invitation to visit his father. There would be nothing unusual about this, except for one fact: his father is dead. "Transfer" is a fast-paced fantasy of a play, with action, visual effects, and superb acting. The play lasts two hours and has one intermission.
