If you ever wondered what the hell a palm tree was doing in the centre of Warsaw, just know it has more to do with art than ironic commentary on Poland's not-so-tropical climate. The 15 metre high statue was designed by Joanna Rajkowska, one of the most interesting young Polish artists that entered the scene in the 1990s. The exhibition was initially organized by the Centre for Contemporary Art of Warsaw in 2002, but the palm tree became a permanent element of Warsaw's scenery, and instead of being removed after the end of the official exhibition, it was taken under the patronage of the President of Warsaw.
